Ledger — Start securely with Ledger hardware wallets

Your crypto starts here. Follow this step-by-step guide to set up your Ledger device, secure your accounts, and recover safely — whether you're a new user or moving from another wallet.

Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?

Hardware wallets store your private keys offline, away from internet-connected devices where they can be exposed. Ledger devices are built with secure elements and proven cryptographic firmware designed to keep your crypto and NFTs safe. With Ledger, you control your keys, you control your assets.

Before you begin — what you'll need

Step-by-step: Quick setup (recommended)

1. Unbox and verify

Make sure the packaging is sealed and the holographic seal is intact. Ledger ships devices in secure packaging — never accept a device with broken seals or suspicious packaging. If unsure, contact Ledger Support before proceeding.

2. Install Ledger Live

Download and install Ledger Live from ledger.com/ledger-live. Ledger Live is the official app to configure your device, add accounts, and manage transactions. Choose the version that matches your operating system.

3. Initialize your device

Open Ledger Live and follow the prompts to create a new wallet. Select Create a new device (or Restore device if you already have a recovery phrase). Choose a PIN code that you can remember but that others cannot guess. Do not store the PIN digitally.

4. Write down your recovery phrase

Your 24-word recovery phrase is the single most important element of your wallet. Write it down on the provided recovery sheet and store it somewhere safe and offline. Never take a photo, email, or store your recovery phrase on a cloud service. Ledger will never ask for it.

Important: If anyone asks for your 24 words, it's a scam. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.

5. Add accounts in Ledger Live

In Ledger Live, add accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other supported assets. This lets you receive, send, and track balances. You can install and uninstall app packages on your Ledger device without losing funds — apps are just interfaces for different blockchains.

6. Receive and verify

When you receive crypto, always verify the address shown in Ledger Live against the address displayed on your Ledger device screen. Confirming on the device prevents malware on your computer from manipulating addresses.

Security best practices

Moving from another wallet?

If you have crypto stored in a software wallet or exchange, you can transfer assets to your Ledger by creating a receiving address in Ledger Live and sending your funds from the old wallet. Always send a small test amount first to confirm everything is correct before transferring large balances.

Frequently asked questions

Can Ledger recover my funds if I lose my device?
Yes — your funds are recoverable with your 24-word recovery phrase. As long as you have the phrase, you can restore your wallet on a new Ledger device or a compatible recovery tool that supports BIP39/BIP44 standards.
What happens if my recovery phrase is stolen?
If someone has access to your 24 words, they can control your funds. Immediately move assets to a new wallet with a new recovery phrase generated on a secure, uncompromised device.
Does Ledger hold my crypto?
No. Ledger devices store private keys on your hardware. Ledger the company does not custody your assets — you are the sole owner of the keys unless you share them or a third party gains access.
Can I use Ledger with decentralized apps (dApps)?
Yes. Ledger integrates with many dApps via Ledger Live and third-party integrations (e.g., MetaMask). Always verify transaction details on your Ledger device before approving.

Still need help?

If you run into any issues, visit our Support Center or contact official Ledger Support through ledger.com/support. Avoid third-party links that ask for your recovery phrase — official support will never request it.
